Lose weight: avoid the vicious circle

Anyone wanting to lose a few pounds will have to outwit his or her body as it defends its fat reserves. This has been necessary for thousands of years to secure survival during hard times. The April 15th 2003 issue of the German magazine "Neue Apotheken Illustrierte/Gesundheit" provides the following tips:

People who deprive themselves of food are likely to send their body signals of alarm. It clings to the fat, emptying its sugar stores into the liver and the muscles, causing virtually unbearable stomach rumbling. In addition, the affected person is left feeling dull and tired.

This behavior does lead to rapid weight loss, causing dieters to return to their normal eating habits once they feel they have reached their goal weight. In fact, they have not reached their goal weight at all. Their bodies simply absorb the food, store it in fat cells and, fearing that hard times my hit again soon, even try to increase their former weight.

This is why people wishing to lose weight often fall victim to the yo-yo effects of dieting, losing a large amount of weight fast, only to gain the same amount of weight - and often more - back again just as quickly..

You can avoid the vicious circle by:

- acquiring a guide containing information concerning fat and calories for as many foods as possible and one containing carbohydrate grams (from your local pharmacy)

- always carrying these guides with you to check whether or not you remain under 60 grams of fat per day

- calculating how many calories you need per day to reach your desired weight without gaining weight again.
